AI in newsrooms: where it is being used and where editors are pushing back. not the theoretical debate, the practice at publications deploying it now.

the most consistent adoption: structured content at high volume. sports scores, financial results, weather summaries, earnings reports. these follow templates and the AI handles them efficiently with low error risk. editorial resources get redirected to content that requires judgment.

the pushback is concentrated around two concerns. accuracy, specifically the hallucination risk on anything requiring factual precision. and attribution, specifically the training data question that creates legal and ethical exposure for publishers whose work trained the models they’re now using.

the disclosure question is unresolved. some publications label AI-assisted content. others don’t. the industry hasn’t landed on a standard and the audience-facing labelling that exists is inconsistent in what it means. “AI-assisted” can mean anything from “spell-checked” to “substantially generated.”.

I work on brand content with media partners. the picture across different publication types.

broadcast and digital news at scale: structured content AI is running in production at most major operations. not announced, just operating. the journalist writes the angle, the AI handles the format.

magazines and long-form: slower adoption. the output quality gap on analytical and narrative content is significant enough that editors don’t want to spend time fixing AI drafts. some using it for research synthesis, not production.

local news: the most interesting case. resource-constrained newsrooms are using AI for coverage that would otherwise not happen. three-reporter papers covering six municipalities now have AI handling routine government meeting summaries.

editorial pushback is strongest on anything where the journalist’s name goes on the piece. the byline creates accountability that AI output undermines.

the local news use case is worth watching. it’s where AI is arguably doing the most good (coverage that wouldn’t otherwise exist) and where the verification risk is highest (no resources for fact-checking).
