AI replacing jobs: which roles are going and which ones aren’t. I’m not looking for the theoretical argument, I’m looking for what’s happening in practice right now. anyone seeing specific roles eliminated or restructured because of AI at the company level?

the roles going first are the ones where the task can be described precisely enough to prompt for. content production at volume, basic code review, data entry and classification, first-pass customer service triage. not the roles themselves always, but the headcount required to do those tasks at the same volume.

the restructuring picture is more common than outright elimination. one person with AI tools doing what three people did before. the headcount reduction shows up in hiring freezes and attrition rather than layoffs. the jobs aren’t gone, they just stopped being refilled.

roles that are genuinely resistant so far: anything requiring physical presence, anything requiring trust in a specific person, anything requiring judgment in genuinely novel situations. the AI ceiling is lower on the latter than most demos suggest.

from advising across a few industries. the pattern I’m seeing.

going or already changed: entry-level content roles (junior copywriters, social media coordinators producing at volume), first-pass legal document review, basic financial analysis, first-tier support roles.

changing in structure: design (fewer junior designers, same or more senior), software development (same headcount, more output expected), marketing (fewer specialists, more generalists using AI tools).

holding stable: client-facing advisory roles, anything requiring institutional relationships, creative roles where the output is the product not the volume, roles requiring physical judgment.

the clearest assessment: the disruption is real but uneven. high-volume, clearly-specified cognitive tasks are going faster than anyone predicted in 2023. judgment-intensive, relationship-dependent roles are holding better than the alarming headlines suggested.

the hiring freeze pattern is worth watching. companies aren’t announcing AI-driven layoffs at the same rate they’re quietly not backfilling positions. the total impact doesn’t show up in layoff announcements.
