has anyone tried humanizing to a specific reading level? i’m working on an undergrad assignment and my department grades partly on accessibility. the AI draft is clearly written for a general professional audience, not for undergrads. running it through a humanizer doesn’t obviously make it simpler. it just makes it sound different. is there a way to control for reading level specifically?

most humanizers don’t have explicit reading level controls. the academic mode tends to maintain formal register rather than simplify it. if you need genuine simplification, you’re better off prompting for a specific reading level at the generation stage than trying to fix it post-hoc.

the prompt approach works better than humanizing for this. ‘write this at a level appropriate for a first-year undergraduate, with clear definitions for any technical terms’ produces different source material than trying to simplify a PhD-register draft afterward.

humanizers flatten things but they flatten toward a neutral professional register, not toward a genuinely simpler one. if the goal is readability for a specific audience, that’s a different problem from detection. you need the ideas expressed differently, not just the sentence structure changed.

i coach writers on this exact problem and the reading level question is one where tool limitations are real.

for detection: [Walter Writes](https://walterwrites.ai/ai-humanizer/) handles sentence rhythm and structure well. it won’t change your vocabulary tier deliberately but it does vary the rhythm enough to clear most detectors.

for actual reading level simplification: do it at the prompt stage. ask your model to ‘explain this as if to a curious undergraduate who hasn’t studied this topic yet.’ the output will be structurally simpler. then humanize the simplified version if detection is still a concern.

trying to both simplify and humanize in one step with a single tool almost never works as well as doing them sequentially.

the Flesch-Kincaid score is the standard readability metric. some writing tools show it. if your department has a specific target, you can check the output against it and iterate the prompt until the grade level lands where you need it.
