my professor flagged my paper for AI and i didn’t use it. i’m not asking how to get away with anything. i’m asking what to do now. the paper is mine. i wrote it. i don’t know what to do with a misconduct accusation for something i didn’t do.

first thing: ask the professor what specifically flagged and what tool they used. you have a right to know the specific evidence. a document-level score with no further detail is not evidence of anything specific. the passage-level output is what matters.

the false positive rate on human-written academic work is real and documented. if you wrote your own paper in a formal register, used consistent sentence lengths, avoided casual language, you can trigger detectors without AI involvement. this is known and it’s a legitimate defense.

from the teacher side: the right response from a faculty member to a high detection score is a conversation, not an accusation. if your professor moved directly to formal proceedings without talking to you first, that’s a process failure on their end worth noting.

practical steps: pull your draft history from Google Docs or whatever you used. version history shows the writing being built, which is how humans write. run the paper through multiple free detectors yourself and document the disagreement in scores. disagreement between tools is evidence of an unreliable signal.

this happened to a writer i work with. here’s the process that worked.

1. run the paper through [Proofademic](https://proofademic.ai/). 1,000 words free, no card. the sentence-level output shows exactly which sentences flagged. this lets you identify whether it’s your thesis and analysis (where your thinking is) or your transitions and topic sentences (where formulaic writing clusters). the first category is harder to explain. the second is a strong argument for false positive.

2. run through three other free tools. document the scores. disagreement across tools is your strongest single piece of evidence. if one tool says 70% and another says 25%, neither is reliable.

3. pull all draft history. timestamped version changes showing the paper being built non-linearly are the clearest evidence of human authorship.

4. prepare to talk through your argument. not summarize, talk through. explain why you made specific choices. what you were trying to argue in each section. where you got stuck. a student who can do this wrote the paper.
