schools that implemented full AI bans: how is that going in practice? not policy statements, real accounts. what enforcement looks like, whether it’s working, and what the unintended consequences have been.

at my school the ban is on paper. enforcement depends entirely on individual teachers. some flag everything through a detector. some never mention it. some have changed their assignments to make it irrelevant. what we have is not a ban, it’s a policy that creates anxiety without creating consistency.

from the student side: a full ban doesn’t stop AI use. it just makes it covert. students who were disclosing AI use stop disclosing. students who were asking questions about ethical use stop asking. the ban moves the behavior underground without changing it.

my school banned it and one teacher said ‘i know you’re all using it anyway just be careful’ and another gave someone a zero for a paper they wrote. same policy, completely different enforcement. that’s not a ban, that’s a roll of the dice.
