I wrote my entire paper myself but I'm terrified it'll get flagged anyway

I have a 1500 word paper due Friday for my English class. Wrote it myself. Like, actually sat down, had the ideas, typed it out. I used ChatGPT at one point to help me reorganize a paragraph that wasn’t flowing right, and I ran it through a grammar tool to clean up some sentence issues. That’s it. That’s the extent of my AI use.

But now I’m reading stuff online about how do professors check for ai and suddenly I’m spiraling. My school just updated its academic integrity policy and it specifically mentions AI detection. I don’t know which tool they use. I don’t know what threshold triggers a flag. I don’t know if “I asked ChatGPT to restructure one paragraph” counts as a violation or not. The policy just says “unauthorized use of AI” which is meaningless because literally nobody has defined what “authorized” looks like.

The worst part is I write kind of cleanly and concisely. Always have. My English teacher even said my writing is unusually structured for my age. Now I’m worried that’s exactly what gets me flagged. Clean, clear writing reads like AI to a machine that’s never met me.

Can teachers tell when you use ai vs when you just write well? Or are detectors actually dumb enough to penalize good writing? I’ve seen posts about false positives happening to ESL students but I didn’t realize it could hit anyone with a consistent style.

Do colleges check for ai on every assignment or only when something looks suspicious? Asking because I don’t want to submit this paper and have my whole academic record reviewed over a paragraph I didn’t even keep in the final draft.

The paragraph restructuring with ChatGPT is the more interesting question and honestly the kind of thing policies haven’t caught up to yet. It’s not nothing, but it’s also not the scenario anyone built these rules for.

Submit the paper. If something comes up, you have a clear account of what you did and why. That’s actually a stronger position than most students who get flagged.
