I rewrote my classroom AI policy last summer thinking I had struck the perfect balance.
I hadn’t.
Version 1 was strict: no generative AI use, including ChatGPT. Enforcement became impossible. Students were anxious. I was suspicious of everything.
Version 2 allowed broad AI integration in schools with “responsible use.” That failed too. The language was too vague. Students interpreted it differently. I spent more time clarifying than teaching.
This semester I simplified.
Here’s what survived:

Brainstorming with disclosure is allowed.

Outline generation is allowed if cited in a process note.

Sentence-level editing is allowed.

Full draft generation is not allowed.
Most importantly: I require a short reflection paragraph explaining how AI was used.
Surprisingly, academic transparency reduced tension more than restrictions did.
Students seem less defensive when expectations are concrete.I’m not claiming this model is perfect. It still relies on trust. But it feels more sustainable than bans.
